The Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) course is a Transport Canadaβapproved training program designed for operators of commercial small vessels operating in near coastal and inland waters.
This course provides the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required for the safe operation of small vessels, including:
π§ Basic navigation and chartwork
β Collision regulations and rules of the road
π‘ Marine communications awareness
π Weather, tides, and environmental considerations
π Emergency procedures and vessel safety
π Canadian regulations and operator responsibilities
This course combines theory, practical examples, and exam preparation to help participants meet regulatory requirements and operate safely with confidence.
π― Who Should Take This Course?
This course is intended for individuals operating or seeking to operate commercial small vessels in Canadian waters, including:
π€ Operators of vessels under 5 Gross Tons
π£ Fishing vessel operators and crew
π₯ Passenger vessel operators (where applicable)
β Workboat and service vessel personnel
π Charter boat and tour operators
π§ Individuals pursuing Transport Canada marine certification
SVOP certification may be required for operators carrying passengers or operating commercial small vessels under Transport Canada regulations.

Participants should meet the following:
β Minimum recommended age: 16+
β Basic English comprehension (instruction and exam are in English)
β No prior marine certification required
β Valid government-issued photo ID
β Willingness to participate in practical exercises and written assessment
